“I am the American Dream. I am the epitome of what the American Dream basically said. It said you could come from anywhere and be anything you want in this country. That’s exactly what I’ve done.” -Whoopi Goldberg
As the 4th of July holiday approaches, I am reminded of the idea of the “American Dream.” The idea that our freedom includes the opportunity to succeed and achieve prosperity. It is the very idea that we all have a right to the pursuit of happiness.
I am proud to be a part of an organization that provides the opportunity of the American Dream. When a child steps through the door of the Club anything is possible. It doesn't matter where a child comes from, what they look like, what they do or don’t have. The only thing that matters is that they are willing to try. To explore. To dream.
Is the American Dream within the grasp of every child?
40% of youth believe that they will not have a better life than their parents.
Every single day at the Club we are providing opportunities and resources to kids that are beyond what they, or even their families, thought possible. On any given day a kid might explore the wonders of space by building a rocket model in our STEM labs, role play having a job and a mortgage while learning financial literacy and exploring careers, or move thunderously down a basketball court pretending to be former Club kid, Shaquille O’Neal. The Club is a place where everyone has the opportunity to do whatever they want to do or be whomever they want to be.
It is our duty to make sure that every child who walks through the door of the Club knows they can live a life without limitations. Even as our country faces unprecedented challenges and turmoil, we must lift up the voices of our youth--challenge them, encourage them, nurture them, and elevate them.
As you celebrate the 4th of July, join not only in the celebration of America, but also in making the American Dream possible for all youth. Have a happy and safe 4th of July!
