April 2, 2020: What happens when you tell kids they can’t come?

On any given day, Boys & Girls Clubs across America open their doors to millions of kids and teens. In Texas, our organization, in particular, serves 1 out of every 20 kids who walk through the doors of a Boys & Girls Club...on any given day. In a state as large as ours that statistic is a little mind boggling when you think about it.

What happens when you tell kids they can’t come?

28,839 kids sought help in big and small ways from Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tarrant County in 2019. We fed 899 of them yesterday. We will reach more of them through distance learning and other types of monitored virtual connections. On the first day of meal service, one mother sent this message to her child’s branch director.

“My kids are missing their daily activities. We are just taking it day by day. We feel very blessed for the meals you’re providing. Love the line and that no one has to get out of their car. My kids are very scared with this virus. They are writing in a journal each day expressing how they feel.”

Her message and a million other moments lately have me thinking of the Chinese characters for the word “crisis”. It takes two characters to express the word. One character is translated to mean danger and the other is opportunity.

Let’s meet danger head on by making opportunity happen.

Together we can,
